Of all the side activities Rockstar has confirmed for GTA 6, one arrived with a qualifier attached that nobody else got. Base jumping, billiards, gyms, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street racing, off-road racing, zoo visits, air boating and jet skiing were all simply listed. Hiking was described as a date activity for Jason and Lucia. That framing is the interesting part, and it is doing more work than the activity itself.
GTA 6 hiking is, on its face, the least exciting thing on that list. Walking, slowly, with no vehicle. The reason it matters is that it is currently the only concrete example anyone has of how the game's confirmed relationship system actually expresses itself in play.
What is confirmed about the relationship system
The verified record here is unusually specific for a system Rockstar has barely discussed:
- The Jason and Lucia relationship is optional and player-driven.
- It is shaped by dates, whether you answer calls and texts, and small gestures.
- It ranges from platonic to romantic.
- It carries no gameplay bonuses.
- It influences story direction only.
- Protagonist switching is available at nearly any time.
That "no gameplay bonuses" line is the load-bearing one, and it is a deliberate design statement. Our optional romance system piece goes through why that is a departure from almost every open-world relationship mechanic of the last decade, and our Jason and Lucia relationship overview covers the narrative side.
Why hiking, specifically
Think about what a date activity has to be, mechanically, in a game where the reward is story rather than stats.
It cannot be competitive, because a date you win is not a date. That rules out street racing, off-road racing and arguably billiards and mini golf, all of which are structurally contests. It cannot be dangerous enough to need a fail state, because failing a date is a frustrating thing to lose progress to. That makes base jumping an odd fit. And it cannot demand much of the player's hands, because the actual content of a date in a narrative game is the conversation.
Hiking solves all three. It is slow, it has no win condition, it has no obvious way to fail, and it leaves the player holding one stick while dialogue plays. It is the open-world equivalent of a long car ride, which is the single most reliable delivery mechanism Rockstar has ever had for character writing. Half of what people remember about Red Dead Redemption 2 happened at a walking pace with two people talking.
The LOVE Magazine Issue 27 interviews sharpen why that matters for this particular pair. The writers have described a relationship built on two people who are vulnerable, tough, flawed, right sometimes, wrong sometimes, able to learn from each other, chasing something modest: a home, a family, financial stability. That is not a story told through set pieces. It is told in the quiet stretches, and hiking is a quiet stretch with a timer on it.
Where you would actually do it
Rockstar has named no hiking location, no trail and no route. What it has confirmed is the geography, and the geography points somewhere obvious.
Mount Kalaga National Park is one of the six confirmed regions, and it is the only one whose name announces protected upland terrain. Our Mount Kalaga guide covers what is known about it. Grassrivers is the confirmed swamp region, which is hikeable in a different and considerably more unpleasant way.
Supporting this circumstantially: over 170 animal species with a confirmed three-tier tracking system, a rebuilt wind system that visibly moves swamp grass, and localised persistent weather that can have one part of the map raining while another is in sun. All of that is scenery designed to be looked at slowly. None of it has been connected to hiking by Rockstar.
The things people are already getting wrong
Three claims are circulating as if they were confirmed:
- That hiking unlocks or improves the romance. The system carries no gameplay bonuses. It influences story direction. A date is not a stat check.
- That there is a date menu, a date counter or a relationship meter. None of these has been described. The confirmed inputs are dates, calls, texts and small gestures, with no interface detail attached.
- That other activities are confirmed dates. They are not. Billiards appeared in Issue 382 as NPC background activity and reportedly in LOVE Issue 27 preview images showing Jason and Lucia at a pool table. A screenshot of two characters near a pool table does not confirm a date mechanic. Our billiards piece covers the evidence standard there.
What is still unknown
- Whether hiking has any control scheme, stamina element or route structure of its own.
- Whether hiking exists outside dates, as a solo activity.
- How a date is initiated, and whether Jason or Lucia can refuse one.
- Whether dates have dialogue choices. A dialogue choice system has been discussed separately but not tied to dates.
- Whether hiking feeds the animal tracking log.
- How many date activities exist in total. Rockstar has confirmed exactly one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is hiking confirmed in GTA 6?
Yes. Rockstar has confirmed hiking, described specifically as a date activity for Jason and Lucia. No trail, location or control detail has been given.
What other date activities are in GTA 6?
None have been confirmed. Hiking is the only activity Rockstar has described as a date. Everything else on the confirmed side-activity list was listed without that framing.
Does dating Lucia or Jason give you bonuses?
No. Rockstar has confirmed the relationship carries no gameplay bonuses and influences story direction only.
Can you skip the relationship entirely?
Yes. The relationship is confirmed as optional and player-driven, and ranges from platonic to romantic depending on how you play.
The Bottom Line
Hiking is the smallest confirmed feature in GTA 6 and one of the most revealing. It tells you that dates in this game are built to be listened to rather than played, that Rockstar is routing its character writing through unhurried shared time rather than cutscenes, and that the studio meant it when it said the relationship pays out in story rather than stats. One confirmed date activity is not much of a system yet. But the one they chose to confirm is the one that says the most about what they are building.
