Among the confirmed technical features of GTA 6 are three that sound like footnotes and are anything but: strand-based hair physics, dynamic clothing, and facial hair that grows over time. They deserve better, because character rendering is where open-world games most often break the illusion — and because each of these three features carries gameplay implications that go well beyond looking nice.
What Each Feature Actually Is
Strand-based hair physics
Almost every game you have played renders hair as cards — flat textured planes, arranged in overlapping layers, that fake volume. It is cheap and it works from a distance. Up close, and especially in motion, cards betray themselves: hair moves as a single mass, clips through shoulders, and looks like a helmet in wind.
Strand-based hair simulates individual strands, or groups of strands, as physical objects. Each responds to movement, gravity and wind independently. The cost is significant — it is one of the more expensive per-character effects in real-time rendering — which is why it has historically appeared in single-character showcases rather than in cities full of pedestrians.

Dynamic clothing
Clothing that simulates rather than sits on the body. In practice this means fabric that responds to motion, wind and — in a game set in coastal Florida — water. A loose shirt should billow when you sprint and cling when you climb out of the ocean.

Growing facial hair
The most quietly ambitious of the three, because it is not a rendering feature — it is a persistence feature. It means the game tracks elapsed time per character and modifies the character model accordingly. Stubble appears if you do not shave.
Rockstar shipped a version of this in Red Dead Redemption 2, where Arthur Morgan's hair and beard grew continuously and could be trimmed at camp or in town. It worked well enough that players treated barbering as a genuine part of the roleplay loop.
Why These Three Together Point Somewhere
Individually, each feature is a fidelity upgrade. Together they describe a system where your character changes visibly over the course of a playthrough — which only makes sense if there are places to manage that change.
RDR2's implementation came with barbers, wardrobes, and clothing that mattered for weather. GTA V had barbershops and clothing stores as cosmetic conveniences. GTA 6 having growing facial hair as a confirmed technical feature strongly implies grooming exists as an activity rather than a menu.
We want to be careful here: Rockstar has confirmed the rendering features, not the systems around them. No barbershop has been announced. No wardrobe mechanic has been detailed. What is confirmed is the tech; the gameplay layer is inference, and reasonable inference is still inference.

The Performance Question Nobody Has Answered
Here is the honest tension. Ray-traced global illumination plus ray-traced reflections plus per-strand hair simulation plus cloth simulation, across a city with dense crowds, on hardware that shipped in 2020, is an enormous ask.
Rockstar has confirmed the features. It has not confirmed:
- Whether they are active in all performance modes or scaled back in a 60fps target
- How many on-screen characters get full-fidelity hair and cloth simulation
- Whether Series S receives the same feature set as Series X and PS5
